Cleaning up the Blog
Posted by Juan in Site Notes on October 15th, 2009
I spent some time today and cleaned up the family blog, upgrading the code and switching to a new WordPress plugin, NextGEN Gallery, for displaying images. It integrates much better with the blog than Gallery2 did and is much easier to configure. The evidence is that I was able to add a few albums today in minutes instead of hours.
Updated site appearance and engine

I updated to the latest version of the WordPress blog management software I use (version 2.2) and took the opportunity to spruce up the appearance of the blog a bit with a new theme. I am also in the process of updating the software used for the only family albums (Gallery version 2.2) so that I can more completely integrate the family albums with the website in the future. (NOTE Added October 2009: I have since replaced Gallery with NextGEN Gallery, which is much easier to integrate into WordPress).
Switching to WordPress and a new Blog Name
Posted by Juan in Site Notes on July 14th, 2005
I’m moving this blog over to WordPress because:
- It has a much better license. This is a big deal because MoveableType switched to a license where only one blog author was allowed, so Catherine was not allowed to post to the blog using that software. With WordPress this is not a problem, since the license allows multiple authors (and multiple blogs, if I so wish).
- Managing the blogs seems just as easy as MoveableType, easier in some ways.
- It manage changes in site appearance much more easily, since it uses themes, so basically I just select a theme and go.
- As the site has grown in size, adding entries with MoveableType has been kind of a pain since the site has to be “rebuilt” every time there was a change. In WordPress, every page is built on the fly and it is much faster without “rebuilds”… yeah!
Tell me if you see any problems with this site since this was a considerable shift in how the site is managed.
Along with this move, I have changed the name of the blog to “Familia.Cabanela.com”. This seemed to make more sense as Carolina and Zakari are no longer “Babies”. This name won’t actually work as a website address for a few more days.
Updated to MoveableType 3 / Ahora estoy usando MoveableType 3

Because of the comment spamming problem, I have updated to the latest version of MoveableType, which should avoid the problem since it requires verifiable registration of users who want to post comments.
Debido a el problema del Spamming de los comentarios en este blog, he instalado la versión más reciente de MoveableType, que debe evitar el problema porque personas queriendo commentar necesitan registrar para hacerlo.
