Rainy Weekend Discoveries

Saturday was a long, mostly rainy day here. However, this actually turned out to be a good thing for us because it allowed Catherine and I to investigate where the water was entering the basement from.
In one of my previous posts I noted that we has some seepage of water into our basement on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. When the rain started, Catherine went over to the south side of the house and noticed water pooling near the window well where the water entered. Since the window well is under the overhang of the house, this should not be possible. I later went outside and investigated and discovered that the downspout of the gutter on that side of the house was clogged. This caused the water to backup the downspout and come out right on to the drain tiles. And (apparently due to settling) the drain tiles were draining TOWARD the house instead of away! So our problem was a combination of drain tiles tilting the wrong way and a clogged downspout.
Sunday the sky cleared up and so the kids and I spent a good chunk of Sunday afternoon removing the drain tiles from the south side of the house, placing new topsoil up against the house, and repositioning the drain tiles so that the now drain away from the house. All it cost me was $4 of topsoil to fix! We have a carpet installer coming in today to reinstall the carpet and I’ll have to put in some new drywall, but all in all we got off inexpensively.
