Two Months in the New House … a Lifetime to Go.

Well, we have been in the new house almost two months now. Like all new homeowners, the first priorities seem to have been modifying the house so that it seems our own (To quote something I once read on a blog “animals mark their territory by urinating on things… we redecorate!”). For posterity I am listing everything I can think of that we have done to the house (or in the case of the electrical, hired an electrician to do):

1. Changed all the doors on the house to share a common lock and replaced the busted up lock on the front door of the house with a beautiful new lock.
2. New house numbers on the front of the house.
3. New, big lockable mailbox. I like being able to take a weekend vacation without worrying about mail piling up.
4. Since the clothes washer that was in place overflowed water with the first load of clothes, we purchased a brand-new front-loading high-capacity clothes washer.
5. New keypad for opening the garage door from outside as well as hidden key storage.
6. Installed an over-the-stove microwave. This involved installing a new electric line to the kitchen.
7. Installed new curtain rods and curtains in the master bedroom.
8. Installed new towel hooks in the downstairs basement.
9. We had two separate thermostats upstairs for the Air Conditioning and Heating, we led to interesting situations where the A/C was cooling the house which would trigger the furnace to heat the house. The thermostats were also the old Honeywell kind that are totally inaccurate in their temperature settings. We merged the wiring for the two thermostats into one new programmable digital thermostat one upstairs. I also replaced the downstairs thermostat (which only controls heat) with a digital one.
10. New ceiling light in the living room and re-wiring the light switch to work the light and not a plug in the wall.
11. We replaced the 1960s era chandelier with a new more modern one matching the other light fixtures in the house.
12. Moving a ten-foot long table in the garage to be permanently mounted in the back of the garage.
13. This week, Catherine painted the upstairs bathroom walls a nice shade of “lavender”.
14. Cut off the top of the gate to the backyard (in a stylish way) in order to allow easy opening and locking/unlocking of the gate from both sides (after also installing new locks on both gates since the old ones were completely rusted.
15. New door latch and piston for the door into the garage since the old one was shot.

And finally, on a negative note, this week we got to experience something many Fargo-Moorhead residents experience due to the flat nature of the land here. We had some water seepage in our basement. As near as I can tell, this was new seepage (the carpet had never been stained before, at least by looking at the underside). So Catherine and I spent a bit of time this past Friday evening pulling up carpet and removing wet padding from our basement guest room and later I removed some of the damaged drywall. Luckily it was only a small area that was damaged. I now need to figure out where exactly the seepage came from so we can fix it before the carpeting goes down. Ah, home ownership.

Hemos vivido en la casa nueva casi dos meses ahora. Como todos los nuevos dueños de una casa, las primeras prioridades parecen ser como modificar la casa de modo que se parezca algo tuyo (como algo que leí una vez en un blog “animales marcan su territorio meando sobre cosas… humanos cambian los adornos!”). Para la posteridad estoy listado todo que puedo pensar que hemos hecho a la casa (o en caso de cosas eléctricos, empleada un electricista a hacer):

1. Cambié todas las cerraduras en las puertas de la casa para tener un llave común y cambié la cerradura reventada en la puerta delantera de la casa por un cerraduras nuevo hermoso.
2. Nuevos números de la dirección de la casa en el frente de la casa.
3. Caja postal nueva y grande. Tengo gusto de poder tomar vacaciones cortas sin la preocupación del correo aumentando.
4. La lavadora decargo una cantidad de agua con la primera carga de ropas, así que compramos una lavadora de gran capacidad.
5. Un nuevo teclado numérico para abrir la puerta del garaje del exterior.
6. Instaló una microonda de sobre la estufa. Esto necesito la instalación de una nueva línea eléctrica a la cocina.
7. Instaló Barras y cortinas nuevas en el dormitorio principal.
8. Instaló ganchos nuevos de la toalla en abajo el sótano.
9. Tuvimos dos termóstatos separados en el piso de arriba para el aire acondicionado y calefacción. Nos encontramos en situaciones interesantes donde el aire acondicionado refrescaba la casa y empezó la calefacción a calentar la casa. Los termóstatos eran también la clase vieja que son totalmente inexactos en sus ajustes de temperatura. Combinamos los dos termóstatos en uno digital y programable. También instalé en el sótano otro termóstato (que solamente controla la calefacción).
10. Instaló un nueva luz de techo en el y cambie el interruptor para controlar la luz y no un el enchufe en la pared.
11. Substituimos una luz nueva en el comedor, quitando una de la era de los años 60.
12. Moví un mesa de 3 metros largura en el garaje. Lo montamos permanentemente en la parte atras del garage.
13. Esta semana, Catherine pintó las paredes del cuarto de baño del piso de arriba.
14. Corte la tapa de la puerta al patio trasero (de una manera con estilo) para permitirnos abrir y cerrar fácil la puerta de los dos lados (después también de instale unas cerraduras nuevas.
15. Cerradura y pistón nuevo para la puerta en el garage puesto que el viejo estaba destrozado.

Y finalmente, en una nota negativa, esta semana conseguimos experimentar con algo que muchos residentes de Fargo-Moorhead experiencian debido a la plana de la tierra aquí. Nos entro agua en el dormitorio en el sótano. Nos parece que esto es una nueva infiltración (la alfombra nunca no había sido manchada antes por lo que parece por debajo). Así que Catherine y yo pasamos una hora esta última viernes levantando la alfombra y quitando el acolchado mojado. Unos días después yo quité parte del pared dañado. Era afortunadamente solamente un área pequeña que fue dañada. Ahora necesito encontrar donde esta entrando el agua exactamente así que podemos arreglarlo antes de que pongo el alfombra abajo otra vez. Ah… así es ser dueño de tu casa.
