| The Fine Art of Baloney Detection | August 20 | PDF (encrypted) | This encrypted PDF (password handed out in lecture or see Juan) contains an article that Carl Sagan wrote on errors in logic that can be used to identify "baloney." You can turn it around an use it as a list of errors in logic to avoid in your own writing and speaking. The article is encrypted because it is copyrighted. |
| 7 Warning Signs of Bogus Science | August 29 | Web site | This is a pretty nice article by Dr. Robert Park, a decent up-to-date followup to Sagan's article on Baloney Detection. It's not aimed at the logical fallacies you will encounter directly. Instead, it is aimed at the actions of the scientist promoting the science. I suppose one could consider it a list of "legitimate" ad hominem attacks. |
| On Being A Scientist: Responsible Conduct in Research | August 15 | PDF (encrypted) | This is an encrypted PDF (same password used earlie) of an article published by the National Academy of Sciences regarding ethics in scientific research. This link is to the second edition from 1995. The first edition report (from 1989) is also available as a PDF from Publications of the National Academy of Sciences, although it is significantly different from the article we will be reading. A Third Edition report is currently being worked on. |
| Ask the Ethicist | August 15 | Web Page | This is the online version of a regular column that appears on APS News. |
| IEEE Code of Ethics | August 15 | Web Page | This is a link to the IEEE's Code of Ethics. This code is aimed more at engineers, but is still pertinent. |
| What Editors Want | September 8 | Web Page | This is nice readable article on what editors of professional journals expect from their writers and the most common mistakes they deal with. |
| CSNS Research Grant Call for Proposals | Sept. 8 | This is the call for proposals for the CSNS research grant. Get some money to do your research. The first deadline is Oct. 8. | |
| Writing Scientific Manuscripts | August 15 | This is the JYI's guide to undergratuates for Writing Scientific Manuscripts. This covers a lot of how the scientific publication process works, not just for their journal, but all science. | |
| APS Journals Information for Authors | August 15 | Web Page | This is the American Physical Society's page of Information for Authors. It is appropriate for contributors to any of the journals they publish. |
| AIP Style Manual | September 14 | Web page | This is the old AIP style guide (dates from 1990). It is useful for preparing publications for the American Institute of Physics journals. |
| Physical Review Style and Notation Guide | September 14 | Web page | The Style Guide for the Physical Review journals. |
| Astrophysical Journal Information for Authors | August 15 | Web Page | This is the Astrophysical Journal's Information for Authors which outlines style and citation issues related to publishing in their journals. |
| Senior Project Website | August 20 | Web Page | This is the website for the Senior Project in Physics. |
| NSF Guide for Proposal Writing | September 22 | Web Page | This page provides a series of guidelines for applying for national Science Foundation Grants. While mostly tailors toward people applying for NSF grants, a lot of the information here is good advice in general. |
| Sean Carroll on Getting into Physics Graduate School | October 1 | Webpage | This blog entry by Sean Carroll is excellent at laying out some of the key information you need to know about getting admitted into a Physics graduate school. |
| Planning for Graduate Studies | October 1 | Webpage | This page on the American Association of Physics Teachers website provides some advice on how to plan for entering a physics graduate program. |
| AAS 211th Annual Meeting Videos | October 1 | Webpage with Video | This page provides links to all the major talks given at the 211th American Astronomical Society Meeting in January 2008. These are long form talks about an hour long each. |
| Sean Carroll Videos | October 1 | Webpage with links to video | This page contains links to a variety of talks on cosmological topics given by Dr. Sean Carroll, a noted theoretical physicist at Caltech. I would like you to focus on the videos in the "Colloquia" section of the page as examples of talks. |
| APS Archived Multimedia Page | October 1 | Webpage with links to RealVideo video files | This page contains links to a variety of physics related collaquia talks given at recent APS Meetings. It's a good place to go for examples of professional level talks in Physics. A lot of the files here are just PDFs of the talk slides, but some videos are available in the Biological Physics sessions. |
| Physics Seminar Videos | October 1 | Webpage | This page is an index to many other sites offering physics related videos of Physics-related seminars. It is a bit out of date and some of the links are broken, but still a good resource. |
| UW Medical Physics Seminar Videos | October 1 | Webpage | This page hosts a small archive of medical physics seminar videos. |
| Berkeley Colloquia Webcast | October 3 | Webpage | This page hosts videos of the colloquia given at the Physics department at at Berkelely. |
