Physics 322:
Elementary Modern Physics

Spring Semester 2009

This page contains the homework assignments that I assign in Physics 322 during the semester. There will typically be an assignment due every Friday during the semester although I may shift things around, especially the week before/during an midterm exam.

Current Assignments: This table only list assignments that were current as of Monday, October 19 at 09:48 AM.

Problem Set 0 (Due Friday, January 16 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]
This problem set will review classical physics, not modern physics. It focuses on some aspects of kinematics and the classical wave equation.
Problem Set 1 (Due Friday, January 23 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]
This problem set reviews some basic special relativity concepts. I suspect the conceptual questions will be harder for some of you than the numerical ones.
Problem Set 2 (Due Friday, January 30 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set centers on reviewing concepts related tothe proper relativistic handling of velocity transformations, energy, and momentum.
Problem Set 3 (Due Friday, February 6 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set has one final relativity problem and then lobes a few problems about particles of light (called photons) at you.
Problem Set 4 (Due Friday, February 13 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set allows you to investigate the wave properties of matter and when it is important to consider these wave properties of matter.
Problem Set 5 (Due Friday, February 20 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set focuses on the Bohr atom and some basics of bound states.
Problem Set 6 (Due Friday, March 6 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set is focuses on the properties of particles in infinite and finite potential wells.
Problem Set 7 (Due Friday, March 13 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

This problem set finishes out some questions about finite potential wells (it was shortened due to the loss of a lecture on Tuesday). Problems 1 and 2 can be tackled without a review of the material to be discussed in the first half of the lecture on Thursday.
Problem Set 8 (Due Monday, April 13 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

A few questions related to quantum tunneling.
Problem Set 9 (Due Friday, April 17 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

A few questions related to taking our previous quantum mechanical ideas into three dimensions.
Problem Set 10 (Due Friday, May 1 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE]

Some questions related mostly to the hydrogen atom and its quantum mechanical nature.
Problem Set 11 (Due Thursday, May 7 at 4:00 pm)

[SOLUTIONS NO LONGER ONLINE] [Corrections to embarrasing errors in solutions upload 2:07pm on Saturday, May 9]

The final problem set of the semester takes us into the realms of intrinsic spin, the exclusion principle, and the nature of the periodic table.
