Past Due Assignments: Assignments that are past due in this table are noted by a orange background. With the exception of the first "Introduction to Mastering Astronomy" tutorial homework, each day a Mastering Astronomy assignment is late, 10% will be deducted off the score down to a maximum of 50%.

Friday, Aug. 29 Hints for using Mastering Astronomy Before signing up because it contains hints for how to sign up, the minimum system requirements, and how to deal with some troublesome interface problems.
Tuesday, Sept. 2 Post Lab 1 This is the post-lab quiz for the Scale of the Solar System Lab. Post Lab quizes will be due every Tuesday after lab.

This assignment consists of some tutorials to get you used to using the Mastering Astronomy system for homework. There is no credit for the assignment because it asks you to intentionally submit incorrect answers for some questions.
Friday, Sept. 5, 11:59 pm Assignment 1: Your Place in the Universe This assignment covers most of Chapter 1 of the textbook, so please read Chapter 1 first. The last question is extra credit because it has a bit of tedious math (not hard, just tedious).

Math Note: If you are math phobic or otherwise challenged by the math in this assignment, please see your lecturer before the due date. We try to be very helpful in getting you to the point where you can handle the math that does show up in this course.

Tuesday, Sept. 9 through Monday, Sept. 15 Lab 3 will meet in the Planetarium (Bridges 167) For this week, be sure to go to the Planetarium (Bridges Hall 167) to attend lab instead of the normal meeting place (Hagen 316)

Friday, Oct. 3, 11:59 pm Assignment 4: Learning the "Rules of the Game" of Physics This assignment covers Chapter 4, asking you to show that you have learned not only to regurgitate the "rules of the game" of physics, but that you can also apply them properly.
Friday, Oct. 3 Deadline for Planetarium Block 1 Observing Project If you are in this group, you must pass the test for credit by this date.
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 11:59 pm Post Lab 6 This is the post-lab quiz for the Mass of Jupiter Lab.
Friday, Oct. 10 Deadline for Planetarium Block 2 Observing Project If you are in this group, you must pass the test for credit by this date.
Friday, Oct. 10 Deadline for Sunrise/Sunset Project (First Draft) If you are doing the Sunrise/Sunset project, you must turn in the first draft sheet (with photos) as outlined in the lab manual by this date. Its 20% of the grade and frankly, you will get full credit if you give it a fair try.
Friday, Oct. 10, 11:59 pm Assignment 5: Solar System Formation and the Sun The first few problems here are from Chapter 7 and deal with the properties of the Solar System (Hint for Problem 7.43, you should be able to do it if you did the Moons of Jupiter lab). Then there are a few problems from Chapter 8 that deal with the Theory describing the formation of the Solar System, Chapter 8.

Friday, Oct. 24, 11:59 pm Assignment 6: The Unbearable Lightness of Solar Neutrinos This problem set (which will come online on Friday, Oct. 17) cover Chapter 4 (on Energy), Chapter 14 (Sections 1 and 2 on the Sun and Fusion), and Chapter 5 (on Light and Matter).
